the highlights
MAD – RocknFunk is the first full installment of our MAD Drum Kit Series. It features an integrated hi-end environment for producing Uber realistic drum grooves with maximum nuance and impact! The idea behind RocknFunk was to sample several iconic kits in such a way to retain a very focused and direct tonal quality at all dynamic levels. With an extended articulation options, a versatile mixer, dedicated groove engine, and immediate playability, you can quickly program convincing drum beats with lots of musical and sonic detail.
RocknFunk packs a lot under the hood with customized elaborate scripts and features that enhance both realistic playback and ease of use. Some features, such as the extensive microphone bleed and Snare Grace notes Legatos, have never before seen in a drum library!
3 Complete Drum kits with a total of 20GB and 24,000+ samples. Up to 20 velocity layers, numerous articulation per drum element, unique release samples, legato transitions, and 4X Round Robin samples throughout!
MAD features Drum kits with an authentic extended dynamic range. The top velocities are at the point of stick-breaking power!
By utilizing a strict playing style, we achieved a powerful dynamic range without losing touch with the musicality of the instrument.
Each kit was captured in a different space using a unique blend of microphones and by recording numerous articulations.
We focused on developing unique scripting features to simplify the drum programming process and keep you focused on the creative process.
The kits are effortless to play.
We’ve implemented extended articulations featuring special playing techniques, Left/Right hand samples, multiple playing zones, and combination strokes.
Other playability features include: automatic note overlap prevention, an extensive Hi Hat engine, and a variable velocity setup.
Rocknfunk includes an ergonomic mixing environment of up to 14 individual microphone perspectives including EQ, Sends/Returns, and custom bussing.
The Hi-Hat engine features various articulations and 6 degrees of Close-To-Open modulation. The auto foot pedal and Legato transitions help you to easily switch between playing zones and apply real-time modulation. The variable attack and velocity curves add the final touch for an unsurpassed Hi Hat action.
Each kit sports around 50dB of dynamic range, which offers a great deal of musicality. MAD’s signal flow design gives you full control over audio leakage (microphone bleed) from almost every microphone perspective. This unprecedented control brings a new level of realism and nuance to drums sound.
MAD features an ergonomic key mapping and articulation layout. Snare grace notes are triggered automatically by playing legato eliminating unnecessary bloat to the mapping. Same goes to cymbal chokes where you can choke any individual cymbal from one key.
Since we’ve included dedicated Left and Right hand samples, the engine disallows impossible note overlaps keeping your performance clean and real!
Explore plenty of Rock and Funk beats complete with alternate grooves and fills ranging from subtle to extreme. All grooves are un-quantized and can be dragged to your host as standard MIDI files.
the instruments
Each of the three included kits is unique and offers a great deal of timbre contrast. We recorded each kit in a different space to further extend versatility of sound. Each recording space has inspired us with different recording techniques, microphone selection, and playing styles.
We then developed custom scripts and a user interface that is deep, yet straightforward and easy to use. The outcome is collection of drum kits that offers a detailed and organic sound that will enhance any music style.

"All three instruments are based on some of the most lifelike samples I’ve ever heard. Scoring Mallets not only sounds convincing, but it also allows you to perform using techniques that sound as if an accomplished Mallet Percussionist were playing."
Geary Yelton
"This library goes well beyond mere sound quality, into the kind of intimate knowledge of the instruments you would expect from virtuoso players. I think libraries like this can improve our musicianship, and in my opinion, this is the highest compliment I can give."

features & tech
RocknFunk is suitable for a variety of music styles aimed particularly at Rock and Funk (doh..). It was designed to utilize an extended dynamic range that is true to each kit and that reflects the dynamic balance of real drummers.
Most often, drum kit libraries extend dynamic range by using excessive modulation of volume with velocity. This is counter productive as it only weakens the signal and causes the dynamic range to be unrealistic.
With our MAD concept, however, you get authentic musical dynamics that reflect the essence of the instrument. Together with the extensive microphone bleed control, totally noiseless samples, and custom scripted features, your drum tracks will have lots of detail!
Meticulous Recording.
Realistic dynamics and articulation
The recording sessions featured an elaborate set of high-end microphones, boutique mic preamps, custom made cables, and perfectly maintained instruments.
Our biggest desire was to reproduce a true dynamic response curve from each element of the drum kit – especially on the low to mid velocities.
The non-linear dynamic curves, emphasized by combining tube and solid state preamplifiers and microphones, give the sound ‘creamy’ overtones with a bit of saturation towards the top of the dynamic range.
Ridiculously playable.
Produce authentic beats in no time
There’s a lot to discover under the hood. We have recorded a wide selection of articulations and organized them into an ergonomic mapping layout for easy programming.
Apart from having plenty of velocity layers and round robin samples, we recorded unique Left and Right hand hits and multiple drum zone articulations so that every nuance and grace note can sound authentic.
And finally, we developed custom scripts to maximize playability – handling variable velocity, choke groups, grace notes, and Hi-Hat modulation.
Extensive Hi-Hat engine.
Finally you can really perform complex Hi-Hat articulations with ease
Playing the Hi-Hat is a lot more involved than just using open and close strokes. We introduce a truly unprecedented approach to programming Hi-Hat parts with an elaborate Hi-Hat engine.
First, we recorded hits on multiple areas of the Hi-Hat from the Tip to the edge so you get an optimal variety of strokes. We then recorded 6 degrees of close-to-open states.
With the Hi-Hat engine you can morph between each state using the mod wheel and control the close-to-open ratio as you play. The engine takes care of the level, attenuation, and residual sustain when moving between ‘Closed’ and ‘Open’ articulations. It also determines the appropriate voice stacking based on velocity and the modulation speed.
You can also modulate the Hi-Hat attack, which comes in handy when programming fast note patterns, adding another level of realism.
To top it off, the Hi-Hat engine will add automatic Foot Pedal stomps when moving between Open and Closed articulations.
Comprehensive microphone bleed.
Shape the timbre of your sound in ways that are impossible with traditional mixing.
There are plenty of ways to shape and control the tone right out of the box. Apart from traditional mixing tools, there are comprehensive microphone blending and bleed control for flexible sonic design and signal flow that’s otherwise impossible to achieve with a traditional mixing console.
You can introduce (or eliminate) sound leakage to various channels with complete control over volume up to unity gain. Simply select the source channel from the available options and introduce residual microphone leakage from other channels.
Typical uses of microphone leakage are to add Snare rattle to the Kick Drum or Toms channels, but MAD’s architecture has more flexibility – like raising the level of only the Hi-Hat from within the Overheads Stereo channel, for instance…
Legato Grace notes and chokes.
Easy management of large articulation count
MAD introduces an elegant way to play Snare Grace notes and simulate realistic voice stacking.
A Snare drum can produce so many different sounds that can take up a lot of real estate within the mapping layout. And then there are also grace notes that can take even more precious MIDI notes…
Instead of bloating the mapping with notes mapped to individual grace samples, you can easily trigger a variety of Snare graces by playing Legato – just hold a Snare key while playing another to trigger it.
Another cool ergonomic enhancement is with Cymbal chokes. You can dynamically perform Cymbal chokes from a single key.
Dedicated groove engine.
Find your beat and drop it to your DAW
The Groove engine is where you can quickly audition rhythmic ideas and use them in your DAW as building blocks or as is. RocknFunk comes with over 700 Rock and Funk Core grooves. Each Core Groove has 5 alternate patterns and 5 fill-ins.
Alts and Fills go from subtle to extreme while retaining the context of their respective core grooves. The grooves are un-quantized to maintain the original drummer’s feel and can be dragged to your DAW as standard MIDI files.
All grooves take advantage of MAD’s special playability options like the modulation options, Hi-Hat engine and others.

7 reviews for MAD RocknFunk
I am a very picky drummer, but this drum library is by far the best sounding drum vst i have played my Roland TD-30 E-kit on. The toms are so lifelike!
Great
As a user of nearly all "big" drum librarys (BFD,Ddrum,Superior etc.) i am using Mad Rock more and more. Itˋs highly playable, very expressiv. Feels natural as if you are playing a real drum set! Mad Rock is the "Wrong Name" - i am a jazz musician
Chris Possmann (Germany)
This piece of software is very well made indeed. There's lot of care about providing enough sources for great natural expression, allowing to play and create complex and believable articulations just with bare hands on keys.
Sorry to monopolize this little comment area, but I MUST saY: terrifically easy download and install. Perfect. NI found them without me asking. Easy to move to “Quick load” for easy switching of kits.
Speaking of which…they are ALL just so IMMEDIATE in their impact…as was the original, but here…no external eq need, save whatever tube saturation is appropriate, and a wee bit of 1176…I’m old school.
I worked mainly with the Red kit..so funky, those cymbals are just incredible, the mark of excellent drum ware. Interestingly, with a bit extra compression, there is an almost “Abbey Road” vintage thing, yet with more bite. Awesome!
The Mixer is terrific, all there, organized beautifully with minimal fuss, and the grooves are wonderfully authentic, in the pocket, usable, with great alternates that don’t dive off the deep end, and fills preceded by a bar of time, to make it SO easy. Truthfully, even with output options in the NI GUI, I’d say at least half of what I’d do would require only the stereo buss, not individual tracks, as all parameters are easily adjustable in the MD Mixer..levels, eq, compression, room, bleed, etc.
IMO, MadDrums Rock/Funk would be a deal at twice the retail price. At $99 (for me less, as I had the original Mad Drums) its a no-brainer. Congratulations Eitan on a remarkable achievement.
Tomorrow I start dialing in the white and blue kits..in between songwriting. Man’s gotta at least ATTEMPT to make a buck.
